I’ve taken Rescue 3 courses in the past and would now like to pursue one of the University Awards. Can I apply my previous Rescue 3 courses towards the award?

Yes! There is currently a process in place to enable students with existing Rescue 3 qualifications to transfer them into the award program. This is known as “Accredited Prior Learning” or APL. Up to two-thirds of an award can be from APL credits.

I am unsure which University award I’d like to pursue. Do I have to choose before I begin taking the courses?

Students don’t need to choose a target award at the start of their first Rescue 3 training course. They can attend their chosen courses, accumulate HE credits and then transfer them into any of the University Awards.

What do you mean by Higher Education Credit

Different universities have different systems for assigning credits for courses. UCLan uses the ModCATS system (Modular Credit Accumulation and Transfer Scheme) which is common in the UK. Under this system a standard semester long course is worth 20 credits and a typical full time workload for an undergraduate student is 120 credits per year.

Below is a chart that compares UCLan’s credit system with a typical US university operating on a semester based system. Please keep in mind that every university has its own way of calculating credits and accepting transfer credits. It’s best to speak with your university for information on their policies and procedures. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us.

Does the University have any admission requirements?

UCLan's admission policy is as follows:

  • Students must be engaged with the area of Swiftwater Rescue / Rescue Boat / Technical Rescue, as demonstrated through employer sponsorship, work experience within the industry (paid or voluntary), prior experiential learning/training and/or educational attainment. These criteria are not pre-requisites for admission but will be considered along with previous life experience and a demonstrated enthusiasm for a career within/related to the Swiftwater Rescue / Rescue Boat / Technical Rescue Industry.

  • Access to a computer with a broadband connection and basic IT skills (ability to navigate web-pages & produce basic Word documents), are essential to engage with the blended learning aspects. Employer’s sponsorship of the student will contribute significantly to this demonstration of engagement.

  • Students attending the Swiftwater Rescue courses must be able to swim at least 100 feet to participate in the practical elements required for the Professional qualification (Rescue 3) aspects.

How do UClan courses differ from traditional Rescue 3 courses?

The program is a hybrid of UClan’s online learning delivered in concert with selected field courses instructed through Rescue 3. These courses differ from traditional Rescue 3 courses in that the University student starts the on-line portion of the course four weeks prior to attending the field component. The online learning component consists of reading online materials, watching training videos, taking quiz’s and writing papers. All this work translates to students having a stronger knowledge base for the field component days, allowing the instructor to focus on students practical skills.
